Rapier and Saber Pedagogy

The Event

Please join us for our fourth annual Rapier and Saber Pedagogy Retreat on July 29-August 2nd. We are eager to welcome you back to beautiful Georgia after a long year for everyone – here is some footage from last year’s event.

Register here

The Rapier and Saber Pedagogy retreat is an intensive fencing instructor’s seminar focusing on the use of historical weapons, particularly the rapier and saber. Our curriculum is based on traditional Italian pedagogy, and our format closely follows that of Sonoma State University’s Fencing Certificate Program. Our four-day, four-night retreat will feature morning and afternoon sessions of guided group lessons, interspersed with lecture and discussion on the underlying theory and methodology of Italian fencing. Registration will be limited to 20 participants

This year’s event will be held at Lutheranch, a retreat center about an hour west of Atlanta, GA. Registration includes food, lodging, and programming. We require all participants to be fully vaccinated prior to attending the event.

Registration is due June 28th. Registration requests after this date will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and an additional fee of $100 will be added. Proof of vaccination is due by July 15th.

We hope to make some partial scholarships available this year as we have in the past. Our scholarships are typically funded by proceeds from SERFO (SouthEast Renaissance Fencing Open). Since SERFO 2020 was canceled, we are raising funds separately. Details will be forthcoming.

We are accepting applications for a partial scholarship for the 2021 Rapier and Saber Pedagogy Retreat. Deadline for applications is May 15th and applicants will be informed of the decision by June 1st. We especially encourage applications from individuals with financial need and groups underrepresented in the historical fencing community.

To apply, applicants will submit a short essay (200-500 words) explaining what they will do with the training provided in the pedagogy seminar. Applicants will also submit a letter of recommendation from a fencing teacher or mentor who can speak to the applicant’s potential as a fencer and teacher. Letters should come directly from the recommender to decaturschoolofarms@gmail.com.
This scholarship will cover $350 of the costs associated with the event. The attendee will be responsible for paying the remaining $200 by June 15th. Please send applications and letters to decaturschoolofarms@gmail.com
